2007 Awards

The Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race Perpetual Trophy is awarded for line honors at Thimble Shoals — the fastest schooner in the race. In 2007, this trophy was awarded to Virginia (AA Fleet), Captain Nicholas Alley, with an elapsed time of 11 hours, 18 minutes and 53 seconds. This is the current time to beat.

The Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race Clock is awarded to the B or C Fleet schooner with the best corrected time at Thimble Shoals. This clock was awarded in 2007 to Adventure-65 (B Fleet), Mark Faulstick at the helm, with a corrected time of 7 hours, 2 minutes and 28 seconds.

The Howdy Bailey Buckle is awarded to a B or C Fleet schooner for line honors at Windmill Point. Prom Queen (B Fleet), sailed by Roger Worthington, received this buckle in 2007 with an elapsed time of 9 hours, 48 minutes and 0 seconds.

Best Overall Finish is awarded to the schooner who wins her fleet with the largest margin (corrected time) over the second-place finisher in the fleet. In 2007, Quintessence (C Fleet), with Paul Gray at her wheel, was awarded Best Overall Finish for winning in her fleet with a corrected time of 7 hours, 35 minutes and 37 seconds, a winning margin of 1 hour, 41 minutes and 15 seconds over Farewell.

The Black Dog Trophy — awarded for the second time in 2007 — was created to honor the individual(s) who supports the Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race in the spirit of Captain Lane Briggs (1932-2005), the founder of the GCBSR. In 2007, John Eginton, captain of Mystic Whaler, received this recogniton.

The Michelob Chesapeake Bay Challenge Trophy used to be given in conjunction with the Harborfest race, which has been discontinued. We are fortunate to have been able to resurrect it to honor a "traditional" schooner which demonstrates extraordinary sailing prowess or accomplishment during the current Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race. Initiated in 2006, this award seeks to identify and bring recognition to a traditional schooner. Presentation of this award is at the sole discretion of the Race Committee. The award recipient does not have to be the fastest or first over the line, but rather the vessel who sails to or above her numbers in a demonstration of seamanship and lasting traditional design parameters. Virginia, under the command of Nicholas Alley, received this honor in 2007.
